How the model works, and where it stops working
The base band comes from what each product type actually lists for across Gumroad, Etsy, Payhip, and course platforms — not what pricing gurus say it should. On top of that, two multipliers. Audience is the big one: a business buying a $79 template is comparing it against an employee-hour, while a hobbyist compares it against a streaming subscription; the ~1.6× business premium shows up consistently wherever both segments buy the same kind of thing. Depth is the honest one: a starter product that solves one narrow job cannot carry a flagship price, however good the landing page.
The output snaps to 9-ending prices because real catalogs do — and the gaps between rungs widen as prices rise, since buyers perceive price differences in ratios, not dollars. What the model deliberately cannot do: read your brand strength, your niche scarcity, or a launch-week discount strategy. How I priced 19 products with this logic
Our catalog runs $9 to $119, and every price came from the same three dials. The AI SEO Command Suite sits at $69: thirty skills, comprehensive depth, sold to people who bill for SEO work — same band, both multipliers pushing up. The iOS Liquid Glass UI Kit landed at $29 mid-band: deep on one design system, professional audience, but a single-platform scope that caps the premium argument.
Two prices I got wrong first. The Indie Game Studio Kit launched in my head at $59 and shipped at $39 — solo game developers are passion-budget buyers, hobbyist multiplier, whatever I wished otherwise. And nothing in the catalog sells under $9, after watching fee math turn a $4.99 idea into roughly $4.20 of revenue on a good day. The pattern from both mistakes: when a price feels wrong, one of the three dials was set by ego instead of evidence.
